Mike Meehan Leads NECTC at 2016 Nationals

In the 2016 version of the Collegiate Club National Championship athletes headed back down to Clemson, South Carolina for round two. Both the Draft Legal and Olympic race courses saw a drastic change in directory.

The weekend kicked off Friday with the Draft Legal National Championship in the midst of a potential rain storm. In a tight second pack Mike Meehan (Penn State), Dylan Morgan (West Point), and Jacob Slife (West Point) all exited the water within one second of each other. During the bike this pack caught the lead 3 athletes out of the water and maintained to the start of the run. Mike Meehan then ran a 15:28 (4:58/mile) to clinch the Draft Legal Championship. Morgan and Slife finished in 4th and 13th respectively.

On the female side Teresa Groton (West Point) had the second fastest swim time of the day and was able to stay with the front group through the bike. She followed up with a 21:23 5k run to finish the day in 8th overall.

On Saturday the females kicked off the Olympic distance racing. Cecilia Davis-Hayes (Columbia) whom won our conference championship race this past fall left herself in a deep whole after the swim, but followed up with the fastest bike split of the day in 1:07:09 (22.2mph). She then ran the 4th fastest run split in 42:37 to finish in 6th overall. Teresa Groton and Catherine Sedy of West Point finished in 29th and 30th respectively.

Mike Meehan led the charge once again for the men. Over 2 minutes down out of the water, Meehan had the 4th fastest bike split (25.1mph) and 5th fastest run split of the day to win his second National Title in as many days. Meehan won by a convincing margin of 47 seconds! Dyland Morgan (West Point) just missed the top 10 finishing in 11th.
