Buzzard's Bay Race Recap

The day started off with a severely shortened swim due to fog and waves up to ten feet high. However, our collegiate athletes stood up to the challenge and the day turned into quite the collegiate battle.

On the female side Teresa Groton (West Point) did just what we expected and lead the entire race with the fastest swim split (4:05) and run split (19:36) to finish with a near three minute victory in 1:03:05. Sonia Rowley (Dartmouth) and Avery Gillem (Coast Guard) had a tough fought battle for second. Gillem exited the water in 4:18, to put a 34 second gap on Rowley and packed on another twenty seconds in T1. Rowley made a move on the bike with the third fastest split of the day (37:05) and cut the lead down to 19 seconds exiting T2. On the run Rowley again put down the third fastest split of the day (20:49) and was able to edge out Gillem who ran a 21:13 by just 7 seconds. Rolwey finished in a time of 1:05:50 and Gillem finished just behind in 1:05:57.

The female team score was closer than expected. The top two female finishers led their teams in a tightly contested battle which found Dartmouth only 18 points behind West Point. West Point's female scorers included (Teresa Groton - 1st, Payton Boylston - 4th, Hannah White - 6th, Sarah martin - 14th.) Dartmouth scorered included (Sonia Rowley - 2nd, Katie Clayton - 7th, Adina Harri - 12th, Valentina Sedlacek - 13th.) Staying with the trend our third place finished Avery Gillem led Coast Guard to a podium spot with 96 points of her own. The final points were West Point 358, Dartmouth 340, Coast Guard 330.

The male race was a different story, and held true to our race preview. Jacob Slife (West Point) led his team in a podium sweep winning with a perfect score of 380pts. After coming out of the water in 5th, Slife finished the race off with the fastest bike split in 32:30, and the fastest run split in

16:28, to finish in a total time of 55:11. Teammate Nick Chatel finished in seconds in a time of 58:03, and teammate Remington Ponce-Pore rounded out the podium in 58:37.

After West Point's perfect male team score, the podium was wrapped up by Dartmouth with 314pts, and Coast Guard with 268pts. Evan Wetzel led the Dartmouth team finishing 5th overall in a time of 1:00:17, while Coast Guard was led by Colin Fenster whom finished in 14th in a time of 1:02:29.
